LUNA 3 Tested — Worth the Update?
By Nick Iden
Universal Audio didn't just update LUNA, they renamed the whole thing Luna Studio and dropped version 3.0 with a stack of new tricks. LUNA Play, stem separation, audio-to-MIDI, lyric and chord extraction… it reads like a wishlist, not a changelog. So I spent real time with it to answer the only question that matters: is it worth updating?
What's actually new
The headline features are the AI-powered ones: stem separation that pulls a mix apart, audio-to-MIDI for turning recordings into editable parts, and automatic lyric/chord extraction. Then there's LUNA Play, which changes how you interact with the whole environment. On paper, this is the biggest LUNA update since launch.
What I tested
I didn't just read the press release, I ran the new features through real sessions and paid attention to where they help and where they get in the way. Some of this stuff genuinely speeds up a workflow; some of it is a version-one feature wearing a fancy coat. The full breakdown, with demos, is in the video.
Should you update?
If you're already in the LUNA ecosystem, there's enough here to justify the click. If you're on the fence about switching DAWs, this update makes the argument stronger than it's ever been — but a DAW is a relationship, not a feature list.
